MAGAZINE PROJECT BA (2019)
My magazine explorations started in 2019 during my second year of University. This exploration/project has really shaped my narrative, technique and practise, to which I have become very passionate about. To start this project, I collected a significant number of magazines. I intended to morph and communicate the imagery in a way that would disguise that they were magazines. Through this process, I started to acknowledge women on the covers of the magazines, remarking their pristine and idealistic portrayal. As such, I endeavoured to try to take the attention away from the women using inks, mixed media, printing and collage. As the project developed, I began to focus on the word "distortion", seeing how I could distort the women depicted on high end magazines. I discovered a process called Gelli Printing which framed my practice. The project's aim became to remove any stereotyping or sexualisation of women within the magazines, creating new imagery that people do not feel compelled to compare themselves.
